According to a report by The Straits Times on March 26, the consumption of traditional cigarettes in Singapore has decreased, while the use of e-cigarettes & HNB products has increased.

According to the study, the average number of cigarettes smoked per week by smokers in Singapore dropped from 72 in the third quarter of 2021 to 56 in the fourth quarter of 2023, while the use of alternative products such as e-cigarettes and heat not burn products also increased from 3.9 per cent to 5.2 per cent over the same period.

The gradual decline in weekly cigarette consumption from the second quarter of 2022 is partly attributable to an increase in the share of occasional smokers and a corresponding decrease in the number of regular smokers. In a survey conducted from December 16 to 29, 2023, it was found that the proportion of occasional smokers increased from 1.2% in the third quarter of 2021 to 3.2% in the last quarter of 2023. Over the same period, the number of smokers has also increased.

It is worth noting that although devices such as e-cigarettes and atomizers have been banned in Singapore since 2018, the use of e-cigarettes remains high, and the use of heat-not-burn products has also risen.

Singapore's Ministry of Health and Health Sciences Authority announced in December 2023 that they are stepping up enforcement and education efforts against e-cigarettes to prevent them from gaining a foothold in Singapore. In the same month, authorities found 1,656 cases related to atomizers, with a significant number of users buying the equipment through online and overseas suppliers.
